About
I’m Smriti (Smer-rih-tee), a field builder working on AI governance and safety in Canada. I started as a climatologist, with an MSc at the University of Toronto on mitigating urban heat, which taught me how data, science and policy fit together. I then moved into software, building Android apps and cloud solutions on AWS and GCP.
Today I work on the community side of AI governance: partnerships, events and translating AI concepts and policy for people who aren’t specialists. I’m helping get AI Safety Canada off the ground, and I built an AI policy monitor, live on Hugging Face, that tracks Canadian federal AI policy by risk, category and agency. I’ve completed courses with Lens Academy and Blue Dot, and I write about AI governance on my Substack, Her Silicon Soul.
I’ve been bringing people together for years as a former Women Techmakers Ambassador, Women Who Code Mobile Evangelist, and GDG Toronto Android co-organizer. Away from work, I read non-fiction, bake, collect Lego Minifigures and am learning guitar.
